The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside still waters. He restoreth my soul...
Psalm 23:1-3
When we think of modern public health crises, insufficient sleep probably doesn’t come to mind. But the lack of a good night of sleep is linked to an astounding number of motor vehicle accidents, industrial disasters, and medical and occupational errors.
Feeling sleepy? Can’t get to sleep? In addition to endangering yourself and others, you are also vulnerable to the harmful effects of discouragement.
“Fatigue makes cowards of us all,” opined the great football coach Vince Lombardi... and so it does.
Can you identify? How many times have you fallen victim to discouragement when you are extremely tired?
Even Jesus couldn’t work 24/7. He often withdrew to a quiet place for solitude, rest, and prayer. Minds and bodies dulled from lack of sleep and constant activity are hindered from basking in and radiating God’s powerful love.
If you are discouraged, set aside time from your busy schedule and tell God how you feel. Spend time in the Bible. Also, get a good night’s sleep. When you wake, you may very well feel refreshed and energized... ready to continue your acts of service to God and others.
Sometimes, the most holy thing you can do is take a nap!
