… I am come that they might have life, and that they might
have it more abundantly.

John 10:10

A young man once came to Jesus and asked what he needed to do to have eternal life. Jesus replied that he should keep the commandments. The young man indicated that he had kept all of them. What did he still lack?

Jesus advised, “If you would be perfect, sell everything you have, give the money to the poor, and come follow me” (Matthew 19:21).

The Bible tells us that the young man went away “sorrowful: for he had great possessions” (vs. 22).

The young man not only had great possessions, but apparently those possessions had him! He couldn’t bear to part with earthly, temporary goods in order to obtain heavenly, eternal goods.

Jesus also taught, of course, that heaven’s “wealth” can be ours now. The young man didn’t have to wait until he died to attain the benefits of eternal life. If he had been willing to give up his hold on his “stuff,” he could have enjoyed great love, joy, and peace... fulfillment in his life... which he was lacking and seeking.

Take a look at your possessions. You have them. Do they have you? What could you give away to someone in need? What material things are distracting you? Give something away today. Discover how rewarding giving can be!

Remember, you make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.
